Meet Me - Author Workshops

School and Library Visits

I would be happy to come to your school or library to do a workshop based on some of my books. Workshops can be customized to suit your needs but generally are 1 hour in length. Each includes a sharing of information, some hands-on activities based on a particular book and a question and answer period at the end of the session. Teachers or librarians are expected to stay with the group during the workshop.

Please note: Since I am a member of the Writers’ Union of Canada, you can apply to them online to have them pay part of my fee.

Workshop One:

Friend or Foe

I offer a workshop for your grade 4, 5 or 6 class about point of view and persuasive language. After sharing some of the content of the book, including talking about the use of different persuasive techniques, your students will participate in an activity that will develop their creative thinking skills.

Grades: 3, 4, 5

Group size: one or two classes

Length of workshop: 1 hour

Fee: $250.00
(You can apply online to the Writers’ Union of Canada for partial payment coverage)

Workshop Two:

Wild Buildings and Bridges

This book is a perfect resource for your structures unit. I offer an interactive workshop for your grade 4, 5 or 6 class that will transform their thinking about designing structures in challenging environments. Your students will also be given the opportunity to design their own structures inspired by nature, of course!

Grades: 3, 4, 5

Group size: one or two classes

Length of workshop: 1 hour

Fee: $250.00
(You can apply online to the Writers’ Union of Canada for partial payment coverage)

Workshop Three:

Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate: How Animals Keep Warm

If you are a grade one or two teacher who is looking for a creative way to teach animal adaptations to your class, look no further. Just invite me in to do a workshop!

Using this humorous interactive book as a springboard, I will incorporate drama to reinforce concepts as well as a hands-on science demonstration. Once your students have a good understanding of how animals adapt to the cold, they will have an opportunity to create their own animal with adaptive features to contend with cold weather.

Grades: 1, 2

Group size: one class or two classes

Fee: $250.00
(You can apply online to the Writers’ Union of Canada for partial payment coverage)

Workshop Four:

Animal Series

This animal behaviour workshop is based on elements from all three books. Using power point pictures, I will share the amazing ways in which animals defend themselves, work and communicate. The presentation is interspersed with participatory activities which demonstrate these behaviours.

Grades: 1, 2

Group size: one class or two classes

Fee: $250.00
(You can apply online to the Writers’ Union of Canada for partial payment coverage)
